But Terminal Station was saved from the wrecking ball by a group of local businessmen inspired by the theme “Chattanooga Choo Choo.” They invested $4 million ahead of its grand opening on the 11th. April 1973, and the beautiful terminal opened its doors again to welcome visitors to Chattanooga – this time as a unique resort complex. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the Chattanooga Choo Choo Historic Hotel is considered one of the city’s first historic preservation projects. Now 46 years later, Choo Choo is still going strong, offering passengers beautiful and comfortable accommodation in unique Pullman Train Cars and traditional hotel rooms. The property is also popular with locals and features two full-service restaurants and several bars, two music venues, a comedy club, a distillery, and a variety of grocery stores.

A newspaper reporter named the humming little steam locomotive the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Although Chattanooga Terminal Station plays an important role in the railroad era with “Track 29,” little is known about the first Chattanooga Choo Choo. It wasn’t until Glenn Miller’s orchestra made the catchy tune in the late 1940s that the name became world famous. In 1941, the Glenn Miller Orchestra introduced the song, which was featured in the movie “Sun Valley Serenade” and performed by Tex Beneke and the Modernaires. Harry Warren wrote the original music, while Mack Gordon took credit for the rhyming lyrics. The Chattanooga Choo Choo song traveled quickly around the world during World War II and today is an international favorite. The Tennessee Chattanooga Choo Choo Entertainment Center is a must-see.
